Daniel

Faithful to his God in the court of Babylon, even before the lions

Daniel was a young man of Judah taken to Babylon when King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem. There he was trained to serve in the palace and given the name Belteshazzar, but he resolved not to defile himself with the king's food, and God gave him wisdom to understand dreams and visions.

He served several kings: he interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dreams, read the writing on the wall at Belshazzar's feast and, in the days of Darius, kept praying to his God even though it led him to the lions' den. In the second part of his book he receives visions that he writes down.
