Era: During the reigns of Ahab and his son Ahaziah over Israel (1 Kings 17:1; 2 Kings 1:2-3)
Elijah
The prophet who prayed, and it did not rain; prayed again, and it rained
Elijah the Tishbite, from Gilead, was a prophet in the kingdom of Israel when King Ahab and his wife Jezebel served the god Baal. He announced a drought, was fed by ravens and by a poor widow, and on Mount Carmel he challenged the prophets of Baal to see which God would answer by fire.
He also knew weariness and fear: he fled into the wilderness and asked to die, and God raised him up and spoke to him in a still small voice. His life ended in a unique way: he went up to heaven by a whirlwind. The New Testament remembers him many times.
