Era: The time of the patriarchs (Genesis 11:29-31; 12:5)
Sarah
She laughed at the promise, and God made her laugh for joy
Sarah, first called Sarai, was Abraham's wife. She went with him from Ur of the Chaldees and Haran to Canaan and lived with him as a stranger there, in tents. For many years she was barren, and the promise of countless descendants seemed impossible.
God changed her name and promised that she would be a mother of nations. When, already old, she heard that she would have a son, she laughed; later she gave birth to Isaac and said that God had made her laugh. Hebrews remembers her faith, and Peter holds her up as an example for believing women.
